SCMF devBlog: Ant Attack!

The world didn’t need it. The mode did though. Ant attack has evolved!

It really didn’t look bad before, honestly. And it was one of the games that people reported actually getting into, which was golden feedback. People who “got it” understood that their snack were being stolen!

In the browser iteration (available for how long?) the game goes for infinity. Red ants, always on the hunt, always stealing your snacks, unless you deploy your own ants in order to steal the snack yourself. That snack is going to someone, it’s just a matter of red or black.

I actually thought about making this it’s own game, before I got back into SnowCone MathFest and saw there was a lot of unfinished business. Now that I am finally here, I am doing this Ant Attack game its justice, and honestly going a little overboard, but I’m almost done.

The first necessary renovation was the Camping Games welcome screen. It’s looking so much better! I’m still not sure that I need the Play Game button, but it’s there to stay for now.

The next screen shows where I’m making some of the biggest additions. Characters! You will get to choose from 6 unlockable ants, of different elements, and someone told me you might be able to unlock the boss as well. I’m keeping her a secret for funsies, but man, the mode is firing well and doing a lot of what I want to. Character selection is mostly about flavor, a la QuickServe Pavilion, but at least here, as you unlock a new character, they are stronger than the last.

This is where I’m still testing. Balancing. Deciding what will make the game more “fun”

In story mode, I’m working on hundreds? dozens and dozens? idk. a TON of haiku. The entire script is in haiku, so it does have a little substance there. I have decided on a new approach that has me looking at them all over again……I don’t want ot break the rules. I want to keep it 575…but I might break that here in there to help with the reading flow. I love a good haiku, I also understand that criticism now that they create questionable English phrasing at times. But by the time you get to the VS screen, you know a battle is about to begin!

The biggest addition? Well, outside of hundreds of novel haikus, adjust artwork, added pngs, story, character selection, boss battles and so on, is the WAAAAAAAVE power!!! After getting 3 perfect grabs, which might not be possible after I start increasing speed, but for rn, after 3 perfect grabs of the food, you get a WAVE power! the wave is evidenced here!

I shouldn’t post this picture. as you can see the wave is currently not working at the bottom, but I’ll get that fixed. Maybe before this blog is over..

There we go! fixed it! And man. it looks great.

So there we have it! Lot’s of new additions to this mode! Full campaign and functional arcade models make this a full game within in a game. Which is kind of what SnowCone MathFest has become. A festival of fun!

So now, the job is to balance and increase replayibility by making some ants harder. Not sure exactly what I will do there, but I’m excited to see how this mode ends!

So anyway, that’s it for now. I can’t wait to update the mode to include this, but for now I’m taking my time!

Also…thanks for reading!
